 What is a Prosthesis?

A prosthesis is an externally applied device designed to replace a missing part of the body or to make a part of the body work better. Diseased or missing eyes, arms, hands, and legs are commonly replaced by prosthetic devices. Generally, most people view a prosthesis as an artificial limb.

Reasons for an amputation

There are several reasons why an amputation is required; your doctor will explain the reason for your amputation.

This surgery is offered when all other forms of treatment have been tried or considered and this is now the most suitable option for you. The reasons include:

Vascular disease: where the leg arteries are narrowed or blocked,

to the extent that there is not enough blood to keep the leg alive.

Circulation problems or severe infection due to complications of

diabetes.

As a result of an accident or injury.

Tumours.
